The most awaited update has finally arrived! Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs has updated its Skilled Occupation List for 2019. According to the latest update, the visa rules have been relaxed to allow farmers to sponsor workers. Of course, more occupations have been added to the list.
The list has been updated while consulting the Department of Jobs and Small Business. All in all, 36 new occupations have been added to the MLTSSL. Per the Department, the updated list will make sure that the entry of skilled foreign workers to Australia remains carefully calibrated to the country’s needs. Visa rules have been relaxed to help farmers and sports bodies.
The SOL now includes 18 new occupations to the Regional Occupation List, including occupations related to livestock, dairy, sheep, beef, aquaculture and crop farmers, and other agricultural roles.
In addition to the above, the category of dentist and anaesthetist have also been added to the list in order to meet skill shortages in regional areas. The Regional Occupation List allows employers to sponsor overseas workers to live and work in Australia for up to 4 years for the sponsoring employer in a specified region.
To respond to changes in the Australian labour market and regional variations across Australia, the list is reviewed regularly by the Department of Jobs and Small Business.
Obviously, some of the occupations have also been removed from the list. Thankfully, it won’t affect the individuals with removed occupations unless there are changes in the circumstances that require the lodgement of a new nomination application. It clearly means that pending nomination and/or visa applications will not be adversely impacted by the subsequent removal of any occupation from the skilled occupation lists.
