Universities

Universities in Singapore are either private or public campuses or branch campuses (satellite campuses) of other popular higher education institutions.

Polytechnics

Polytechnics provide more industry-oriented programmes which prepare work-ready graduates. Both diploma and degree programmes are offered at polytechnic institutions.

Institute of Technical Education (ITE):

ITEs provide technical-oriented studies in areas like business, electronics, media and applied sciences. Students studying at ITEs develop technical skills and knowledge to work at several industries.

Intakes

Though academic intakes vary from institution to institution, there are two intake periods in general. The admission cycle changes depending upon the admission cycles of various other universities which have campuses in Singapore.

  • August and January for postgraduate and undergraduate programmes.
  • Private institutions have intakes every quarter.

Cost Involved

Living expenses could be anywhere around SGD 5,000, including stay, transport and food. Housing expenses range from SGD 150 to 2,000, depending on the type of accommodation the student selects.

The cost of studying in Singapore for international students could vary between SGD 2,000 and 12,000. The tuition cost is relatively inexpensive, and most universities offer financial aid for international students. Here are average costs of different levels of programs.

  • Diplomas – 1-2 years (SGD $9,000 to SGD 15,000)
  • Bachelors – 2-4 years (SGD 24,000 to SGD 35,000)
  • Masters – 1-1.5 years (Cost- SGD 18,500 to SGD 30,000)

English Language Proficiency

  • Polytechnic Diploma & Bachelor programs ask for overall IELTS band score of 6.0 or equivalent.
  • Master Degree ask for overall IELTS band score of 6.0 – 6.5 or equivalent depending on the program.

WORK rights

Student Work Rights

Singapore does not allow students to take up just any work. The Universities in Singapore have internships related to the course that student is planning to study. A student can only opt for the related internships. Also, most of the universities have partnerships with industrial houses which provide the students to work part-time.

  • According to the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore, international students on a Student Visa in Singapore are eligible to work part-time for about 16 hours a week during term and for unlimited hours during vacation, provided:
    • They are a registered full-time student in one of the approved institutions
    • They hold a valid Student Pass issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA)
  • Even if student is studying in an approved university, if the university does not have an industrial attachment program (neither compulsory nor elective), then the student is not eligible for a part-time work.
  • Students studying in the university/institution which is not on the list of approved institutions are not eligible to work part-time or full-time during the term and/or vacation. For list of approved institutions, please contact us.
