New DAMA Areas Released

Year 2019-20 Migration Program Gets 160,000 Places

Every year the Australian government sets a quota for the migration intake for the Migration Program. Migration Program year 2019/20 is set at 160,000 places. This year will have more places allocated to the Employer Sponsored, Regional and State and Territory Nominated visa categories.

Global Talent – Independent Program

Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) announces Global Talent – Independent (GTI) program to identify, attract and invite the best and brightest skilled migrants from across the globe. The program includes up to 5,000 permanent migration places including secondary applicants.

DAMA (Designated Area Migration Agreements) Program Expands to New Areas

A DAMA provides flexibility for states, territories or regions to respond to their unique economic & labour market conditions through an agreement-based framework. Under this framework, the employers in designated areas experiencing skills & labour shortages can sponsor skilled & semi-skilled overseas workers, which allows them to access a broader range of overseas workers than is currently available through the TSS or ENS program. A DAMA utilises the labour agreement stream of the TSS 482 visa.
DAMAs are now in place for:

  • Northern Territory
  • Great South Coast, Victoria
  • Goldfields, Western Australia
  • Regional South Australia
  • Adelaide city
  • Orana, New South Wales
  • Far North Queensland

Different regions will have different occupations available and different requirements. There is still a need to be sponsored by a business under the DAMA, but it may be worth looking at possible job opportunities in these areas.

Benefits you may have if your occupation falls under DAMA:

  • Pathways to permanent residency for labour agreement TSS visa holders
  • Waivers to English language requirements
  • Concessions to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) and no caveats

Please note that the benefits may vary depending upon the occupation and which DAMA one may fall under.
